《弥赛亚神曲》

《弥赛亚神曲》是亨德尔(G.F.Handel)23部神曲之中最杰出的作品。亨德尔仅用了24天的时间——1741年8月22日至9月14日——就作成了。1742年4月他在爱尔兰首府都柏林第一次演出《弥赛亚》，为孤儿院募捐。甚至在他眼睛失明的时候，仍然坚持着这件善举。为了使孤儿院得到更多的款项，他禁止人们在他生前出版《弥赛亚》。在写作的过程中，据说当亨德尔写完《哈利路亚》合唱曲后，他的仆人看到他泪珠夺眶而出，激动地说：“我想我是看见了整个的天堂，还有至尊的上帝”！自从这部神曲问世之后，几百年来一直为人们所热爱。世界各地都可以听到它。千千万万的人们被这个奇妙的音乐的庄严大合唱和动人的独唱所激动。音乐把光辉的信息注入人们的心灵，激动人心的音乐中，使人们感受上帝的威严圣洁、慈爱与恩典。

　　全曲共分为三大部分，第一部分讲述了基督即将来临的预言和基督的降生。第二部分讲述基督的受难、死亡、复活和基督的教义。这一部分的高潮处是最著名的大合唱《哈利路亚》；第三部分讲述救主战胜死亡及最终的审判。结尾是宏伟的《阿门颂》。

　　《弥赛亚》全曲主要精神虽然注重救赎的信息，却超越了教会的教义，成为一种非礼仪的圣乐，而向全世界人类传达救恩的喜讯。它的内容澈头澈尾取材于圣经，采用以赛亚书为重心，诗篇、福音书及书信为辅佐，约伯记及小先知书（哈该书、撒迦利亚、玛拉基书）则适当地穿插其中，却能有一贯的精神，它实在不是圣经的选辑而已。亨德尔采撷圣经资料的广博及其一贯性，证明了他本身对于救世主、“弥赛亚”的神学及福音深入了解的成熟度。《弥赛亚》实在是一首颂赞救主基督全生涯的作品，从旧约圣经的预言，到主耶稣的出生、生活、受难、受死及复活，以迄荣耀的再临，使我们清楚认识了整曲的一贯性。

神剧「弥赛亚」与韩德尔的心灵世界

　　「Messiah」（弥赛亚）的震撼
　　
　　韩德尔(George Frideric Handel 1685-1759)生于德国之Halle，最终荣耀地被葬于英国西敏寺。韩德尔与巴哈同年出生；1985年与巴哈同时被全世界爱好音乐及宗教音乐的人士热烈地庆祝300年生辰大典。他的神剧创作远从1708年即开始，一生约有两打作品，除了两首以义大利文写作之外，其他都以英文的脚本为依据。取材大多出自圣经或犹太民族中的英雄人物。如：以斯帖、底波拉、扫罗王、以色列人在埃及、约书亚、参孙、所罗门王、耶弗他、犹大马加比亚斯等，最后一首是譬喻式的 (Allegorical)「时间与真理的胜利」（The Triumph of Time and Truth）(1757年　)。至于「弥赛亚」神剧却是独树一格的作品，是一首包含了旧约及新约，注重灵修、思考有关救世主「弥赛亚」的作品。
　　韩氏的「弥赛亚」可说是全世界被演唱最多的神剧（包括以英文及其他许多语文，当然英文被唱的最多），也是基督徒耳熟能详的圣乐；其中之「Alleluia」大合唱，更是许多大大小小的合唱团、圣歌队唱过或试著去唱，许多人都能「倒背如流」的曲子。而演出的人数，首演时有18人诗班（6位男童女高音，12位男性演唱者中有4位唱女低音、 4位男高音、 4位男低音），共使用了33件乐器──12支小提琴、 4支中提琴、 3支大提琴、 2支低音大提琴、4支双簧管、4支巴松管、2支小喇叭、1组定音鼓、1架管风琴。
　　这是1742年4月13日在爱尔兰首都都柏林首演的编制。而莫札特在1789年重编的乐谱，使后来演出的人数大增，同年在伦敦就有275 位人声及248件乐器的记录。而1859年在伦敦的韩氏100年逝世纪念会时，合唱团高达 2765人、乐器460件。1869年在美国波士顿「和平日节庆」演出时，更曾有过一万人大合唱「Alleluia」、500件乐器伴奏的记录。在台湾YMCA的Oratorio Chorus每年连续不断地于12月间推出，今年将是第50周年的演出，「弥赛亚」受欢迎的程度于此可见一斑。此外甚至有所谓的「弥赛亚大合唱节庆」，就如在美国普林斯顿的西敏寺音乐学院，常常邀请普林斯顿附近的居民，自备乐谱参加大合唱，英国的伦敦也常有此盛况，人数有时多达2000人。
　　
　　当然，世上有许多贫穷的人，也因著「弥赛亚」的演出而多少获得些帮助，许多医院更因而被建造或改建。世界上各个角落每年都有人因为唱「弥赛亚」而获得心灵上的鼓舞，产生更多向上迈进的力量。许多基督徒因为听了它而更爱主、爱人。也有不少非基督徒（特别是大专院校的合唱团员）因为参与了「弥赛亚」的演出而深受感动，决心追求真理、用音乐服事世人；福音的种子撒播在各种数不尽的，唱过、听过「Messiah」的人心田之中，任何适当的时期，都可能发芽开花而结果。
　　
　　
　　弥赛亚神剧的写作背景
　　
　　剧本的作者查理·詹宁斯（Mr. Jenmens 1700～1773）是伦敦当时相当富有的人，他以写文章及剧本为至高之乐趣，并充满达到顶尖的雄心。他自认是当时最杰出的剧作能手，饱读莎士比亚的剧作，对于许多古典文学作品也涉猎广泛。韩氏在1725 年开始与他成为好友，发现詹氏对他的音乐了解至深而相当惊讶，后来就采用了詹氏的脚本写神剧，如「扫罗王」及「伯萨撒王」等，而「弥赛亚」则是詹氏心目中精心的作品，不过，他大概做梦也没有想到它会成为万世留芳的脚本（甚至有人曾说它是「前古无人，后无来者」的杰作），与韩德尔同被歌颂，永不褪色。
　　
　　
　　「弥赛亚」的剧本共分成三大部分：
　　
　　救主降临的预言及他的诞生。
　　救赎的信息及救主为全人类的牺牲。
　　救主战胜死亡及最终的审判。
　　全曲主要精神虽然注重救赎的信息，却超越了教会的教义，成为一种非礼仪的圣乐，而向全世界人类传达救恩的喜讯。韩氏本身似乎完全了解信息的中心，而能时常在音乐中用最简单的方式，将严肃的信息表达出来。

　　在这首神剧中，不像别的神剧那样可清楚地让人看出主角何时出现，可是「弥赛亚」的中心思想却澈头澈尾地掌握了全曲，而成为韩氏的神剧作品中最特殊的一出。它实在是一首颂赞救主基督全生涯的作品，从旧约圣经的预言，到主耶稣的出生、生活、受难、受死及复活，以迄荣耀的再临，使我们清楚认识了整曲的一贯性。
　　
　　
　　韩德尔的宗教生活及音乐的创作生活
　　
　　韩氏的宗教生活，虽未被清楚记载，然而我们却可从他的作品，找出他为教会贡献心力的情操及宗教生活的参与。从1702年（当时仅17岁）完成第一首教会音乐「赞主曲」，一直到1750年共完成40首左右的教会音乐，其作品中最著名的有夏安多斯颂歌（11首）、Passion Music（十架最后七言），而神曲则达二打之多，还有许多管风琴协奏曲，这都与他的宗教生活息息相关。
　　韩氏身为德国人，却在英国人的世界中闯天下，本来，他是以歌剧作曲家的身份，自1711年开始进入伦敦的生活圈，由于作品生动、有变化，又颇合英国人的口味，到了1741年时总共完成并演出了41出歌剧、９首神剧。但他辉煌的歌剧声誉从1735年开始走下坡，歌剧创作似乎已到了「江郎才尽」的地步。他所投入的精神及金钱，全部付之一炬，歌剧院被迫关门，负债累累、身心俱疲。这一年的7月，当他收到好友詹氏寄给他的三本脚本，即「扫罗王」、「弥赛亚」及「Belshazzar」（但以理书中的伯萨撒王－－尼布加尼撒王之子）（参看但以理书五：1～7节）。韩氏很感激詹氏，也回信表示一定会好好地研究这些脚本。虽然他并未马上著手写曲，但是很显然地，「弥赛亚」的脚本在韩氏潦倒的生活中，渐渐地成为他的灵修圣品。到了1741年
　　8月22日，终于受到极大的感动而开始写出令人耳目一新而又感人至深的旷世杰作。此后，韩德尔封笔不再写歌剧，而只写神剧。直到去世时，一共再写了17首神剧，其中包括：「参孙」、「约瑟」、「犹大马加比亚斯」、「约书亚」、「所罗门王」及「耶弗他」等，这是韩德尔心灵可贵的转变。
　　
　　从他的经历，似乎也告诉我们，在人生的旅程当中，「失败」并不一定是负面的，韩氏歌剧事业的失败，似乎使他转眼仰望上帝的慰藉，也重新忆起自己年轻时写教会音乐的热情；而詹氏的「弥赛亚」剧本，就像是「及时之雨」，使韩氏的心田及时获得滋润。以前或许未对救世主「弥赛亚」的真义了解透澈的韩德尔，现在得到了詹氏的帮助，深深体会到「救世主」的真实性；而当他感动之余，流畅的乐笔源源不断谱出圣乐；当中许多写作的技巧，实在也是得力于以前不断写歌剧的磨练。这又让我们了解到：基督徒的人生不一定都是顺遂的，重要的是能记取「失败」的经验，转眼向神重新得力，而后重新起步为他而活。
　　
　　韩德尔在1741年8月22日（星期六）下午开始写作「弥赛亚」，6天之内便完成了第一部份，9月6日完成第二部份，9月12日完成整曲的架构，然后写了管弦乐部份并加修整，前后一共只花了24天，那是惊人的快速也是充满灵感的。据闻韩氏在写作之中常常被感动得泪流满面，泪水浸湿了手稿。尤其当他写到「哈利路亚」大合唱时，曾双膝跪倒在地，双手向天，喊著说：「我看到天门开了」。韩氏在感动之余，原本希望藉此赚点钱的念头也打消了，1742年在都柏林首演时，海报上写著：「为了一些困苦的囚犯，以及梅尔舍医院的利益」而演出。在3月27日预演时，大家都非常感动，为了达到慈善演奏的最高效果（希望多些人入座），宣传单上注明妇女们不穿蓬裙、男人不佩剑。4月13日首演果然轰动。到韩氏去世时，一共演出56场。1750年5月1日在伦敦更是演出最成功的一场，而奠定了「弥赛亚」神剧在圣乐史、音乐史上的永久地位。
　　
　　韩德尔在写作「弥赛亚」时，似乎已经亲身看见、亲手触摸到救世主，而他的生命至此全然改变，我们可从他1757年所写的「时间与真理」，体会出他成熟的宗教情操──他不再急功好利，他开始追求人生真实的意义。从此以后，韩氏好像与巴哈携手并进，从心底写出对至高上主的赞美与感谢，将一切的荣耀归与真神上帝。也惟有这样伟大的心灵，才能谱出感人至深的音乐，为许多世上迷途的人们指点迷津，照亮了他们人生的旅途。
